A funny thing happened while practicing Saucha

I've done my socks in the sink. I've soaked work shirts in the tub.  I've borrowed a neighbor's machine.  I've walked through a jungle of damp clothes dangling from doorways in my apartment.  I've waited a month to do laundry at the launderette, many a time.

I very, very, very much DISLIKE the washing of clothes.  Not sure what part of it I have the aversion to, but my incompatibility with it is well known. Though I do fancy clean duds.   I realized today though, that laundry isn’t SO bad.  I found a place for it in my heart; small space that it is, still, it is space.  So laundry, yeah, I hate it!  I know, strong word.

I now have a new house that came with a new yard and in the new yard is a clothesline.  Seemed it was a romantic thing, to have a clothes line.  My mind immediately, went to the movies, Sense and Sensibility, Little Woman, Bright Star, Emma, you get the picture.  I even bought an old-fashioned clothes pins.

Sweating, I lugged the basket to the line, clothes pins in a cute little bag over my shoulder, a forced smile on my face.  Beauty in the act of hanging wet clothes on a rope with old-fashioned clothes pins is what I want to find.  I breathe and listen and start guiding myself through pranayama and imagery.   I quickly get there and I am listening to goats, kids playing and I'm smelling bread.  I have a bonnet on, the sun is shining, open fields, white apron.  Can you see it?   I am gently winding myself through this relaxing guided meditation, following my breath through each newly imagined moment. It was wonderful.  I fell into my clothes line world, enjoying myself.

The AC kicked on and startled me back to reality.  Damn AC!  I started to get mad, but then I looked down at my basket and there was nothing in it.  I looked up at the line and it was full of clothes.  I was done!!!  I smiled, flashing my pearly whites, a real one this time.   Remembering Svadhyaya, the fourth of the five niyamas (observances towards ourselves) Sva means “self” and adhyaya means “investigation, inquiry, or education.  I naturally fell in line with what I was destined to do…Educate myself.  I am learning everyday, all the time, big and small. So Laundry, yeah I was done, well, I still have to fold them.  One thing at a time.

We now have a washer and a dryer and are blessed to have a back yard with a clothes line. Luckily I have the tools yoga has provided me.  One thing at a time. self-education, breathing, energy, love, patience, oh gosh, I could go on for a very long time.  Basically.... I think I'm ready to do another load of laundry.

OM Shanti
