What to Expect in a Private Barratt Breathwork Session

A typical session is composed of four segments, which are briefly
described below:

Customization: Each of your sessions is customized for your
particular needs. If you are new to breathwork, this customization is
based on a confidential questionnaire that you will complete upon
arrival to your session, supplemented by a brief discussion with
Gabrielle. If you are already working with Breathwork and within the
program, the customization is based upon your evolving needs and
interests as they have developed during earlier sessions.

Understanding : For your initial session, Gabrielle will provide a
brief overview of the ancient history of breathwork therapy, and a
description of the unique characteristics of the Barratt Breathworks
model. You will then be invited into one of the therapy studios, and
asked to lie down on a massage table, fully clothed in a supine
position.

Breathing and Mindfulness : You will be guided through a meditative
process designed to bring you into a state of relaxation. Then,
assisted by Gabrielle, you will engage in breathing and mindfulness
practices that will address your particular needs, helping you balance
your emotions and facilitating healing and self-development

Integration: Following the dedicated breathing and mindfulness
segment, you will proceed to the final element of your session, the
“integration period.” This part of the session is very important,
because it gives your body and mind the opportunity to adjust to the
biological and energetic changes that have occurred as a result of the
breathing and mindfulness segment. You can plan on your session
lasting approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.

Cancellation Policy: You may cancel or change your appointment up to
24 hours in advance of your service. After that time, a 50%
cancellation fee will be applied.

A Balanced Approach To Breathwork Practices

Originally the Science of Breath was an oral tradition taught by
skilled teachers who carefully monitored the physical, emotional and
psychological health of their students as they experienced various
stages of healing and transformation. Some of these practices can
trigger strong physical and emotional cleansing, possibly resulting in
unexpected side effects. Therefore, breathwork should not be used by
itself, but rather should be part of a systematic approach which
encompasses other supportive techniques that serve as a container for
integration. It is highly recommended that one seek out the guidance
of a competent teacher before engaging in any breathwork technique.
Breathwork has powerful potential as a therapeutic practice and, when
used wisely, can have transforming effects on consciousness, physical
health and well-being.

The Barratt Breathwork Approach

In addition to supplying oxygen during the process of respiration, the
breath simultaneously draws in another energetic quality, known as
"prana." This prana, or "Qi" as it is called in China, is the vital
energy of life. Eastern adepts have long been aware of the
rejuvenating power of prana, recognizing it as an essential link
between the mind and body. For centuries, they have used specific
breathing practices to harness and direct this life energy in order to
facilitate healing and self-development. It is these breathing
practices that form the basis of the Barratt Breathworks Aproach.

In recognizing that the breath is a primary vehicle for our life
energy, we begin to understand how the quality of our breathing
literally reflects the quality of our lives. When we begin to
cultivate an awareness of our breath, many of us notice that we are
unable to breathe fully, and that our breathing is labored or erratic.
Most of these tensions in the breath grow out of highly complex
breathing habits caused by chronic stress and suppressed emotions.
Our dysfunctional breathing habits inhibit the body's natural ability
to draw in and absorb prana, creating energetic disturbances within
the human energy system. These energetic disturbances deeply affect
the intricate balance of the mind/body continuum, ultimately
undermining health and well-being.

Our model employs a systematic approach designed to identify and
dismantle dysfunctional breathing habits as a means to impact energy
flow and allow it to move more freely. As tensions in the breath are
released, the movement of energy through the human energy system
becomes stimulated and is redirected to balance both excesses and
deficiencies. By dissipating energetic blocks and regulating energy
flow, this redirected energy helps restore the synchronistic balance
within the human energy system, resulting in improved health and
emotional balance, which ultimately lead to personal and spiritual
growth.

Benefits of BreathWork

Modern scientific research demonstrates what Eastern traditions have
known for centuries. When we breathe effectively, we create optimum
conditions for restoring overall health and well-being. Breathwork has
been known to achieve remarkable results, including

Relieving stress and fatigue
Inducing deep relaxation
Restoring physical health and vitality
Decreasing anxiety
Balancing blood pressure
Pain management
Improving sleep patterns
Increasing mental concentration
Emotional healing
Enhancing self-awareness
Personal growth
Spiritual development

“Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person in an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity. Flow is completely focused motivation. In flow, the emotions are not just contained and channeled, but positive, energized, and aligned with the task at hand. The
hallmark of flow is a feeling of spontaneous joy, even rapture, while performing a task.”

This is similar to the idea of “being in the zone” while at work or during sports and much like channeling a creative expression into dance, music, or art. As a child, Michael would be immersed for hours and even days in some sort of activity. Those moments had a timeless, effortless sense about them. The rest of life seemed to fade into the background and patiently await his return. As an adult, he recognized that he was in “the flow” and has made a practice of getting there as often as possible. Seeking flow is what inspires him to do what he loves. It is in that state that he feels most natural and balanced. He attributes this phenomenon, not so much to the activity at hand, as much as with living in the moment, not concentrating on past or future. He believes that by being mindful, aware, and intentional, anyone can focus their energy with compassion, integrity and inspiration to achieve greater flow in their daily lives.

Michael is a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and Bodyworker. Raised in Norfolk, He left nearly fifteen years ago to travel and live life as a sailor. Trade winds led him around the world on what ended up being a journey of self- discovery and a redefinition of purpose. Joined by his soul mate Kristen Lyle, He returned to Norfolk in 2011, started a family and eagerly began developing FLOW Massage & Bodywork. To undertake this line of work is a natural expression of his compassion, integrity, and awareness. He does not view clients as broken, and therefore does not feel a need to fix them. He views people as whole and complete and himself as assisting their effort to cultivate balance and grow naturally. Michael takes pride in centering his practice on individual attention and deliberate intentions.

Michael would like to extend deep gratitude to all of the amazing healers that have selflessly shared their gift with him. Twenty years of receiving bodywork and nearly five years of practice has had a profound and lasting effect. He has become more aware of his personal ability to heal from within and views the mind, body, and spirit as interdependent and inseparable. He has experienced that by removing blockages and keeping channels open, holistic energy flows more freely and expands; and that by combining bodywork with practices like yoga and meditation, one can realize the benefits of each more fully. Consider expanding your regular practice to include touch therapy too.

Incorporating elements of Eastern and Western modalities, each massage is customized to accommodate the
client. Whether applying the “good hurt” of Deep Tissue work, the subtle nuances of Craniosacral Therapy, or the mystical dance of Thai Massage, the foundation of Michael’s work is firmly rooted in metta, a Pali word defined as “a benevolence toward all beings, without discrimination, that is free of selfish attachment” and also indicating, “a strong, sincere wish for the happiness and wellness of all beings”.

Kim not only appreciates the daily reminders yoga brings to who she is, but also considers the incredible influence it brings to her family. Raising her two children, daughter Josie and son Hobie along side her husband Greg, with the principles and understanding of yoga and Ayurveda is for Kim a wonderful way to contribute back into the world. It is her goal to forward deeply her personal devotion to yoga, and equally important for her to share, on any level, the gift of yoga with others. Kim believes that by planting even the smallest of seeds to even the smallest of insights, is giving back on a Universal level. By working with people in ways most suitable to their needs Kim hopes to motivate any start for opening up to a better life. Her eleven years experience as a massage therapist is only complimentary to her abilities as a yoga teacher and Ayurvedic Practitioner. Kim has been practicing and studying yoga for close to ten years and has successfully completed both the 200 hour (in 2004) and 500 hour (in 2006) level of teacher training with well respected teacher Anna-Amulyana Pittman. At this level she is certified and registered (500RYT) with the National Yoga Alliance. Kim has also experienced profound influences studying with senior level teachers Sarah Powers, Aadil Palkivala and Doug Keller. She has been certified by Emerson Theological Institute and the Dhanvantari Ayurvedic Center, after finishing the required 500 hours of studies with teacher Vijaya Stallings in 2008 to become a practitioner of the cosmic science of Ayurveda. In her teachings she intends to blend today's more modern lifestyle with the ancient wisdom of Vedic philosophy. She knows through pure experience how Ayurveda can cultivate a profoundly clear understanding of what balance can do for the body, mind and soul. Kim has also extended her yoga studies and teachings to infants, toddlers and children. She is trained and certified in the Internationally known Itsy Bitsy Yoga Program. She has also certified in prenatal yoga and enjoys very much bringing the practice of yoga to women preparing for motherhood. After considering the contrast of each personal experience (carrying and birthing one child without yoga in her life and another with the a strong yoga practice and awareness) Kim feels well aligned to share and encourage other women to seek a more organic, connective and amazing prenatal experience.
